The Antony Lord Foundation in association with www.rsct.org.uk

ONE BRAIN., ONE LIFE … ONE CHANCE! LOOK AFTER IT !!
It’s not so much a question of “if you can afford to” but “if you can afford not to?” We all have choices, what is best for you though?

LATEST UPDATE

October 2007

!! We are delighted to announce that JON SNOW, President of the CTC and Channel 4 Anchorman, is happy to be named as a Patron of the Antony Lord Foundation !!

Jon Snow, the President of the CTC and Channel 4 News Anchorman, whom Jo met in April at the CTC Annual Dinner, has become a Patron of the Antony Lord Foundation.

His reason very simply, is he cannot imagine what Jo has been through as indeed, none of us can but responded when approached saying "I’m proud to be associated with the Antony Lord Foundation. Antony was killed riding a bicycle. His mother’s determination to persuade other children to get cycle training was a courageous response to her unimaginable loss. As a cyclist and the father of daughters who cycle, I regard what she has achieved with gratitude."

How often Jon would be able to make it down here is another matter and given his professional responsibilities, it certainly won't be something that happens regularly but no-one is arguing that point., we are just grateful to him for his support and permission to use his name.

Wendy, to her surprise found herself named as SW Volunteer of the Year by the CTC for her work with ALF., who else was she going to take to receive her award but Jo. Without her setting up the foundation, it probably wouldn't have happened although ALF isn't the only charity she does cycling fundraisers for ... but it is the one closest to everyone's heart.

Wendy said "We had no idea Jon would even be there let alone making the presentation.  I knew he was the new President but for the same reasons as we won't see much of him when we are fundraising for ALF, I didn't really expect to see him that night either, let alone receive the award from him - an award which in some ways, should have been Jo's for having the courage to do what she has done in the wake of Antony's demise."

Women of Achievement Awards 2006

I didn't win my category in the conventional sense but from the angle that I met so many other very deserving finalists (we were 24 in total, for 8 categories) and people who hopefully we will work with in the future, we all won out in a way that is beyond belief, including linking up with Clare and Genevera from Vitality Matters - check it out and drop in on them some time too ... http://www.vitalitymatters.org.uk/welcome.html

It was a brilliant experience and a wonderful evening ... I'd been so scared and given the reason for the nomination, there was a serious emotional element to it but it really was out of this world - and we got to walk around one of the Biomes too., I'd never been to the Eden Project before but I do plan on going back!

We've posted the list of both finalists and winners of each category together with photos of both Lady Holborow and the finalists of the evening, on the gallery page as a tribute to the hard work each and every one of them put in and the difference they make by doing so as they are all winners in their own right!

UPDATES:-

Also clarification on another issue - please be aware, we are only a small charity but do our best ... we don't have hundreds of thousands to throw around and Wendy will do what she can to make it go as far as possible but our primary aim is to do what Wendy is doing and that is making training available to as many children as possible.

I did have someone contact me recently, asking me for both new bikes and to pay for level 3 training, their own children having done Cyclewise.  I have to draw the line somewhere as the cost of both of those especially when there is more than one child involved, would fund a lot of helmets and holiday courses and probably take up the best part of 25% of the charities annual income so please, don't ask and then you can't be offended by a refusal.

If you want Level 1, 2 or 3 courses run by your school or youth organisation, then perhaps you should apply online to www.awardsforall.org.uk assuming that you qualify to apply and we don't buy new bikes for children either, we really don't have that kind of money - you'd be surprised what can be found in a skip or on a tip too, many a decent bike for whatever reason, gets thrown away to the point it is almost obscene and a classic case of throwing money away!

The sun shone and a lot of people I've never met before turned out this morning for the ALF Memorial Ride - Thank you ... that means a lot to me! And just to add to the confusion, the ITV cameras turned up (thanks Greg) so they could run a report in tonight's West Country News., it was a good report too which captured the spirit of the ride but also the reasoning behind it all as well.  Nothing can bring Antony back but if we help just one child, then we will have achieved our objective although we'd like to think perhaps we could help more than one!!

The next thing on the agenda is a raffle - a year ago we'd planned to have an auction and amongst the things we had donated to us was vouchers from Rick Stein for a meal for two at his Seafood restaurant or to use to purchase items from his site on the internet for those who lived too far afield to go to Padstow to his restaurant.  We still have those vouchers but with various family matters that took priority, as happens in the aftermath of the loss of a child, it never happened so now we are getting raffle tickets printed up instead ...

The vouchers of course, will not be the only prize .. there will be others too although as yet we haven't compiled the entire list of prizes to be won as we are hoping that a few more may be forthcoming .. and if anyone reading this would like to help us, then please do get in touch!

Thanks again to everyone who turned out and/or sent us donations to swell the coffers, it was much appreciated.  Safe cycling., Jo
